Discord Account Without a Phone Number: What Works

You are on the Discord registration page, or staring at a "verify your account" banner, and you do not want to hand over the mobile number you have used for a decade. The good news is that most people who search for this do not need a number at all — and the people who genuinely do need one are usually failing for a reason that has nothing to do with which service they bought from.

Here is what Discord's own documentation says today: where a phone number is actually mandatory, what triggers the verification prompt in the first place, why the number you tried was refused, and what to do in each case.

Can you create a Discord account without a phone number?

Yes. Discord's official sign-up guide lists the registration fields as email, username, password and date of birth. A phone number is not among them. On the desktop and browser flow you will not even be offered a phone field.

Mobile is where the confusion starts. The Discord app opens registration with a single field that accepts "your phone number or email address" — phone first, which reads like a requirement. It is not. Tap through to the email option and the rest of the flow is identical.

So if you are sitting on the sign-up screen right now: use the browser, or switch that first field to email, and you are done. No number, no service, no payment.

What you are trying to do Phone number needed? Notes
Register a new Discord account No Email, username, password and date of birth are the documented fields
Chat, join servers, use voice No A verified email covers the great majority of servers
Join a server set to the "Highest" verification level Yes This is the only level that requires a verified phone number
Clear a "verification required" prompt on your account Usually yes Triggered by activity Discord's systems flag as automated
Use SMS as your two-factor method Yes An authenticator app is the better option and needs no number

When Discord actually asks for a number

Phone verification on Discord is a risk check, not a registration step. It appears in two distinct situations, and they call for different responses.

The server asked for it. Discord gives server admins five verification levels. "None" lets anyone chat immediately. "Low" requires a verified email. "Medium" requires that email to have been verified for longer than five minutes. "High" adds ten minutes of membership in that specific server. Only the fifth level, "Highest", requires a verified phone number attached to your account. One detail worth knowing: Discord states that having a verified phone number supersedes all the other requirements, so a verified number is also what gets you past the ten-minute wait on a "High" server.

Your account got flagged. Discord lists the behaviour that trips this: joining multiple servers in a short period, direct messaging multiple people who are not your friends, posting "faster than a human can manage", and using third-party clients or modifications to Discord. The first two catch a lot of ordinary new users — someone who signs up, finds eight communities they like and joins them all in ten minutes looks exactly like a bot to an automated system.

If that is you, the prompt is not a punishment and there is no appeal queue to join. It wants a number once.

Why Discord rejected the number you tried

This is the part most guides skip, and it is written down plainly in Discord's own verification FAQ. The error table lists four distinct failures, and the fix is different for each.

Error you see What it means What to do
Invalid phone number The number was mistyped, or it is a type Discord refuses. Discord's wording: "VOIP, Burner, or Landline numbers cannot be used." Re-check the format first, then the line type
Rate limit / recently used That number was used for verification too recently Wait 24 to 48 hours before trying the same number again
Existing account The number is already attached to another Discord account — sometimes one you forgot you made Remove it from that account first; a number cannot be on two at once
Captcha An extra security step, not a problem with the number Complete it; contact Discord support if it will not pass

Two of those deserve expanding.

The "invalid phone number" error is doing double duty, which is why it causes so much frustration. A meaningful share of these are pure formatting: Discord wants the number in E.164 international format — country code, then the national number, no spaces, dashes or brackets. Before concluding your number is blacklisted, try +14155550123 rather than (415) 555-0123.

If the format is right and it still fails instantly, the line type is the problem. Discord refuses VoIP numbers, and the check happens as a carrier lookup against the number's line type before any message is sent — which is why the rejection comes back in under a second with no code attempted. That rules out Google Voice, TextNow, Skype numbers and most free second-number apps. We covered the Google Voice case specifically in does Google Voice work for SMS verification, and the lookup mechanism in how websites detect VoIP numbers. If you are unsure which category a number you already own falls into, what is a non-VoIP number lays out the distinction.

The "existing account" error is the one that quietly blocks people for weeks. Discord's documentation is unambiguous: "Phone numbers can only be associated with one Discord account at a time", and the number you verify with "cannot be associated with an existing Discord account". If you made a Discord account in 2019 and verified it with your mobile, that number is spent until you remove it there. Adding an already-linked number to a new account may also remove it from the old one automatically — which is a genuinely bad surprise if the old account is one you still care about.

Your options, ranked by how well they work

  1. Register with email and skip the number entirely. Free, instant, and the correct answer for most people reading this. Verify the email properly — a verified email is what satisfies the "Low", "Medium" and "High" server levels, which is nearly all of them.
  2. Use an authenticator app for two-factor, not SMS. If your reason for avoiding a number was security rather than privacy, this is strictly better: TOTP apps are not vulnerable to SIM swapping, and Discord does not need a number to enable them.
  3. Pace yourself on a new account. If you have not yet been flagged, you can usually avoid the prompt altogether. Join two or three servers on day one rather than fifteen, and do not open DMs to strangers in your first hour. This costs nothing and is the most underrated item on this list.
  4. Your own mobile number. If you have a mobile you are willing to attach and no privacy objection, use it. Fewest surprises by a wide margin. The reason to look elsewhere is usually that you do not want a decade-old personal number tied to a gaming or community account, or you are outside a country Discord's SMS routing covers well.
  5. A non-VoIP mobile number you control. A number provisioned on real mobile carrier infrastructure passes the line-type lookup the same way a handset does, receives the SMS, and keeps your personal number out of it. The important word is control — see the caveat below about rentals versus one-off codes, because on Discord this choice has consequences months later.
  6. Free "receive SMS online" pages — don't. The numbers are public, shared with everyone else viewing the page, and recycled constantly. Anyone can read your code, and most of those numbers are already attached to a Discord account, so you will hit the "existing account" error immediately. For an account tied to communities you care about, this is a bad trade at any price.

Verifying Discord with a non-VoIP number, step by step

  1. Create the account with email first. Do not go shopping for a number before Discord has actually asked for one — most accounts never see the prompt.
  2. Verify your email from the confirmation message. This alone clears the "Low" and "Medium" server levels.
  3. If and when the verification prompt appears, get a US mobile (non-VoIP) number you will be able to keep. A one-off code catcher is the wrong instrument here — see the warning below.
  4. Open User Settings, then My Account, and add the phone number there in E.164 format: +1 followed by the ten digits, no spaces or punctuation.
  5. Request the code. If nothing arrives in two or three minutes, resend once and then stop — repeated attempts trip the 24-to-48-hour rate limit and you will lose a day. Our diagnostic checklist for missing verification codes covers what to check before resending.
  6. Enter the code, then record which number went with which account somewhere you will still have access to in a year. This matters more than anything else on this list.
  7. Turn on two-factor with an authenticator app while you are in there. It is the one change that makes the account meaningfully harder to lose.

Limits worth knowing before you choose a number

  • One number, one account, at any given time. This is Discord policy, not a technical quirk. It also means a number is not a way to run several accounts — and it means a shared or recycled number is very likely already spent.
  • A disposable number is a future lockout. If Discord asks you to re-verify after a password reset or a suspicious login and the number is gone, you are relying on email recovery and a support ticket. Rent a number you can hold, or use your own.
  • The rate limit is real and unhelpfully long. 24 to 48 hours. Resending five times does not speed anything up; it guarantees the wait.
  • Burner numbers are named in the refusal. Discord's error text calls out VoIP, burner and landline numbers together. "Burner" here means the throwaway-app category, not a second number in general — a number on genuine carrier infrastructure that you control is a different thing, which is the distinction we drew in burner numbers for verification.
  • Removing the number later is possible. Unlike some platforms, Discord lets you remove a phone number from your account in User Settings, which frees it for use elsewhere. Do that deliberately rather than by adding it somewhere else.

The unglamorous summary: register with email, pace your first day, use an authenticator app, and only buy a number if Discord actually asks — and if it does, buy one you intend to keep.

FAQ

Does Discord require a phone number to sign up in 2026?

No. Discord's sign-up guide lists email, username, password and date of birth as the registration fields. The mobile app offers a phone field first, but email is an accepted alternative in the same field. Phone verification is a later risk check, not a registration requirement.

Why does Discord say my phone number is invalid?

Two different causes share that message. Either the number is not in E.164 format — country code, digits, no spaces or dashes — or it is a line type Discord refuses. Discord's own wording is that "VOIP, Burner, or Landline numbers cannot be used", so Google Voice, TextNow and similar app numbers fail instantly at the carrier lookup.

Can I use one phone number for two Discord accounts?

No. Discord states that phone numbers can only be associated with one Discord account at a time. Adding an already-linked number to a second account can remove it from the first, so check where your number is attached before you try.

How do I get past a server that requires a verified phone number?

That server is set to Discord's "Highest" verification level, which is the only level that requires a verified phone number on your account. There is no way around it other than verifying a number or asking the admins — and since a verified number supersedes the other levels, it also clears the lower ones.

Can I remove my phone number from Discord afterwards?

Yes. The number can be removed from your account settings, which also frees it to be used on a different account. Just be aware that if Discord later asks you to re-verify, you will need a working number again — so do not remove it the week you are changing passwords.
