Not Receiving a Verification Code? How to Find Out Why

The site said "we sent you a code". You waited. You pressed resend. Nothing. Before you try a third time, it is worth knowing that "not receiving a verification code" is several different failures that look identical from where you are sitting, and each one has its own fix. Pressing resend fixes about one of them, and makes two of the others worse.

This guide walks through them in the order worth checking.

First: did the site actually send anything?

A lot of "missing" codes were never sent. Many signup forms check your number before sending, and when they do not like it they show the same "code sent" screen anyway, or a vague "try again later". The code is not delayed. It does not exist.

The usual reason is the line type. The site runs a carrier lookup, sees a VoIP number (Google Voice, TextNow, most free second-number apps), and quietly refuses to spend money texting it. We explain the lookup in detail in how websites detect VoIP numbers.

How to tell: try the same number on a second, unrelated service that sends codes. If it never receives anything anywhere, the number is being filtered. If it receives codes from some sites and not others, keep reading.

Fix: use a number that is on a real mobile carrier. See what is a non-VoIP number if the distinction is new.

The nine common causes

1. The number is VoIP and the site filters it

Covered above, and it is the most common cause by a distance. No amount of retrying changes the carrier record, so resending will not help.

2. You pressed resend too often

Almost every platform rate-limits verification. After three or four requests in a short window, further requests are accepted on screen and silently dropped. Some platforms lock the number for hours; a few lock it for a day.

Fix: stop, wait at least 15 minutes, then request once. If you have already hammered it, wait longer rather than trying again.

3. The message is delayed, not lost

SMS delivery is not instant. Codes travel from the site to an SMS aggregator, then to the destination carrier, then to the handset. Any of those queues can back up. Most codes arrive in seconds; some take a few minutes; a small share arrive after the code has already expired.

Fix: give it two to three minutes before resending. If a code arrives late, request a fresh one rather than typing the stale one.

4. Your phone is filtering it

Both iOS and Android can divert messages from unknown senders into a separate folder. Short-code senders (five- or six-digit numbers) are also blocked by some carrier plans and by "premium SMS" blocks.

Fix: on iPhone, check Messages → Filters → Unknown Senders. On Android, check the spam or blocked folder in Google Messages. Ask your carrier whether short codes are blocked on your plan, which is common on prepaid and business lines.

5. The number is already tied to an account

Many services allow one account per phone number. If the number already has an account, some will send the code to that existing account's login flow, some show an error, and some send nothing at all.

Fix: try the "forgot password" or "log in with phone" route instead of signup. If it is not your account, you need a different number.

6. Roaming or international routing

If you are abroad, or using a number from a different country than the service expects, codes can be dropped between carriers. Some services also refuse to send to certain country codes entirely.

Fix: check that roaming SMS is enabled, or use a local number for the country the service expects. If you need a US number from outside the US, this guide covers the options.

7. The site's SMS provider is having an outage

It happens more than you would think, and it is invisible from the outside. If a service's sender has an outage, nobody gets codes for a while.

Fix: check the service's status page or social accounts. Wait an hour.

8. The site prefers another channel

Some platforms send the code to an app you are already logged in to, by email, by voice call, or by WhatsApp before they try SMS. The screen usually says so in small print.

Fix: read the prompt again. Look for "didn't get it? try another way", and check the app on your other devices.

9. The number range is blocked

Large platforms keep block lists of number ranges that have been used for heavy signup traffic. A number can be genuinely non-VoIP and still fall inside a range the platform has decided to distrust.

Fix: a different number, ideally from a different range or carrier. This is why some services let you pick the carrier or area code.

A quick triage order

  1. Wait three minutes. Do not resend yet.
  2. Check your phone's spam or unknown-senders folder.
  3. Look for an alternative delivery option on the site.
  4. Try the number on another service. Nothing anywhere means it is filtered or the number is VoIP.
  5. Wait 15+ minutes, then request exactly once.
  6. Still nothing: use a different number, on a real carrier.

When the number is the problem

If steps 1 to 5 point at the number, whether because it is VoIP, it already has an account, or its range is blocked, the fix is a different line rather than more patience.

That is the case our SMS verification numbers are built for. Every number is a US carrier line, you see the price for the specific service before you order, and the message appears in your browser as soon as it lands. If no code arrives before the number expires, you cancel the order and the charge goes back to your balance, so a failure like the ones above does not cost you anything.

If you get the dreaded "this phone number cannot be used for verification" rather than silence, that is a different failure with its own guide: what that error means.

FAQ

Why am I not receiving verification codes from any site?

When nothing arrives from any service, the problem is on your side: a filtering setting on the phone, a short-code block on your plan, or a VoIP number that every site is refusing. Test with a service you know works, and check your carrier's SMS blocking options.

Why does the verification code come for some apps but not others?

Because each app makes its own decisions. One accepts VoIP numbers and another filters them; one has rate-limited you and another has not; one has blocked your number's range. Codes from some sites but not others almost always means the number, not the phone.

How long should I wait for a verification code?

Most arrive within 30 seconds. Wait two to three minutes before resending, and do not request more than three times in a row, because that is the point where rate limits start dropping requests silently.

Can I get a verification code without a phone?

Yes. A number you rent online receives the SMS in a browser rather than on a handset. For accounts you plan to keep, use a rental number rather than a one-time one, so the same number can receive a recovery code later.
