When you order a number it is reserved to your account for the length of that order. Nobody else is given it while you hold it. Anything texted to it during the window is collected upstream and pushed to the page as it lands, so there is no refreshing and no mailbox to sync.

When the order closes the number goes back to the pool and stops being yours. That is the model the price follows: you are renting a real carrier line for the minutes it takes to receive one code, not buying a line to keep.

Free receive-SMS sites publish a handful of numbers with an open inbox beside each one. That design has three consequences, and they compound:

• Everyone reads your code. The inbox is the product. Anything sent to that number is on a public page within seconds, including a password reset you were mid-way through.
• The number is already taken. Thousands of people have tried the same number on the same popular services, so the account you want to create almost certainly exists.
• The number is already blocked. Public lists get scraped, and the services worth verifying against block them wholesale.

They are genuinely free and they genuinely do not work for the sites people need them for. A private number costs money because the number is held for you and the log is not public.

Ordinary application-to-person SMS: verification codes, one-time passwords, short confirmations. Delivery time belongs to the carrier rather than to us — usually seconds, occasionally longer when a route is congested.

Each order carries its own expiry, shown on the order itself. If nothing arrives before then, cancel it and the charge is returned, provided no message has come through.

Stated plainly, because the limits decide whether this is the right tool at all:

• You cannot send. These numbers are receive-only. There is no reply box, and there will not be one.
• You cannot take voice calls. A service that offers to read the code out over the phone has no path to you.
• You do not keep the number. It is yours for the order and then it is not.

That last one matters more than it sounds. If an account may ask you to re-verify in six months, or is tied to money you would be upset to lose, register it with a number you will still control then. A number rented for one code is the wrong foundation for an account you intend to keep.

Some services support reusing a number you have already received a code on, so a follow-up message reaches the same line rather than a new one. Where it is available it is offered on the order itself, and it is priced separately because holding the number costs more than releasing it.
