Walmart Account Without a Phone Number: The Reality

If you are looking for a way to create a Walmart account without a phone number, the honest answer up front is that you can't — not on walmart.com, not in 2026. The mobile number field on Walmart's registration form is required, and Walmart texts a one-time code to it before the account exists at all.

That is the short version. The longer version is more useful, because Walmart's phone rules are stricter and stranger than most retailers' — there is a 45-day lockout and a one-number-one-account rule that quietly breaks signups for people who have done nothing wrong. This post covers what Walmart actually asks for, why the number you tried was refused, what you can switch off after the account exists, and where a separate verification number is a reasonable answer.

Can you create a Walmart account without a phone number?

No. Walmart's own help documentation lists the fields on the "Create Your Walmart Account" screen as first name, last name, email address, mobile phone number and password. There is no "skip" link, no email-only path, and no alternative identity provider that bypasses it. Walmart states plainly that it requires a valid phone number for all new and existing accounts.

The verification step is a text message. You enter the number, Walmart sends a one-time code, you type the code in and select "Verify number and create account." Only then does the account exist. A verification email follows to your inbox afterwards, but the email is confirmation, not the gate — the SMS is the gate.

You can still shop without an account in some cases. Guest checkout exists for straightforward shipped orders, which is worth knowing if you need one delivery and nothing else. But guest checkout gives you no order history, no returns portal, no Walmart+ and no pickup or delivery scheduling, and it still collects a contact number for the delivery itself. For anything ongoing, you need the account.

Walmart's two phone rules that break legitimate signups

This is the part almost no guide mentions, and it explains most of the "phone number already in use" complaints you will find on help forums.

Rule one: one number, one account. A phone number can be linked to only one Walmart account at a time. Not one per email, not one per household — one, full stop. If your number is already on an account you made years ago and forgot, the new signup will refuse it.

Rule two: the 45-day lockout. If a number has received a Walmart one-time code within the past 45 days, it cannot be used to create a new account at all. Wait out the 45 days and the number becomes usable again — but when you use it, Walmart removes it from whatever other account it was attached to.

Read those two together and the consequence is sharp: using your own mobile number on a second Walmart account will eventually detach it from your first one. People discover this when their original account stops accepting their number for sign-in. If you share a household and someone already used the family mobile, you are in this situation whether you meant to be or not.

What Walmart requires, step by step

  1. Open the account creation page and enter your first and last name.
  2. Enter an email address you can actually access. This matters more than it looks — see the warning below.
  3. Enter a mobile number capable of receiving SMS. It must not be on another Walmart account, and must not have received a Walmart code in the last 45 days.
  4. Set a password: at least eight characters, upper and lower case, plus a number or special character.
  5. Receive the six-digit code by text and enter it, then select "Verify number and create account."
  6. Open the verification email Walmart sends and confirm the address.

One warning on step two that Walmart states outright: if you lose access to the email address linked to your account, the documented remedy is to create a new account. Password reset codes go to email only, not to your phone, and they expire after 30 minutes. So the email address is the real recovery anchor here. Do not use a throwaway inbox you will abandon next month.

What you can change after the account exists

Here is the good news, and it is genuinely good: the phone requirement is heaviest at signup, and lightest afterwards. Under Account > Personal info, Walmart lets you choose how you sign in from three options:

Sign-in method What it needs each time Can codes go to email?
Password Your password only No code involved
Password-less A one-time code, no password Yes — phone or email
Two-factor authentication Password plus a one-time code Yes — phone or email
Password reset A six-digit code, 30-minute expiry Email only

In other words, the number is a one-time toll at the gate rather than a permanent dependency. Once you are in, you can route every ongoing code to email and never need the phone again for sign-in. That changes the calculation on which number to use at signup, because the number does not have to be one you will still hold in three years — though it does have to be one you can receive a text on today, and one you can get back to if Walmart ever re-verifies the account.

Why your number got rejected

Walmart refuses numbers for several distinct reasons, and the error message rarely tells you which. Working through them in order:

  • The number is on another Walmart account. The most common cause. Sign in to the old account and remove or change the number there first, or use a different number.
  • It received a Walmart code in the last 45 days. Nothing to fix; the number is in its cooling period.
  • It is a landline. The field wants a mobile capable of receiving SMS. A landline cannot complete the step.
  • It is a VoIP number. Retail signups routinely screen these out by line type, which is why app-based numbers that work fine for personal texting get refused by signup forms. Our guide on how websites detect VoIP numbers explains the carrier lookup behind that check.
  • It is a Google Voice number. Google Voice is VoIP, and it is one of the most reliably blocked line types across major platforms — see whether Google Voice works for SMS verification for the detail.
  • The number is not US-formatted. Walmart.com is a US storefront; a foreign mobile number will often be refused at the field itself before any code is sent.

If you are not sure which category your number falls into, you can look up its line type before you try again. We walk through the free and paid options in how to check if a number is VoIP.

When a separate verification number makes sense

There are a few situations where using a number other than your personal mobile is the sensible choice rather than a workaround:

Privacy. Your mobile number is probably attached to your bank, your email recovery and your messaging apps. Handing it to a retailer adds it to a marketing and loyalty profile and to the breach surface of a company you interact with a few times a month. Keeping a dedicated number for commerce signups is the same reasoning behind a separate burner number for verification.

You are outside the US. Expats, international students arriving on a US campus, and people shipping gifts to US addresses all hit the same wall: a US storefront that wants a US mobile before you have one. A non-VoIP US number closes that gap, and does so without any pretense about who you are.

Your household number is already spent. Given the one-number-one-account rule, a second adult in the same house genuinely needs a second number. This is not a loophole; it is the rule working as designed.

A warning worth stating plainly. Competitors in this space market Walmart numbers for running multiple accounts, which in practice means promo abuse and reselling — and Walmart does enforce against it. Accounts built that way get closed, and anything in the cart or wallet goes with them. If your plan is one real account with a number you control, you are fine. If your plan is twelve, no number service will save you from the fraud team, and we would rather tell you that than sell you the attempt.

What to look for in a number that will pass

If you decide to use a separate number, the only property that matters is line type. It must be a non-VoIP mobile number on a real US carrier, because that is the single attribute the signup check is testing. Secondary things worth checking:

  • You hold it for long enough to finish. A number that expires in ten minutes is fine for the code and useless if Walmart re-verifies next week. Given the 45-day rule, a short rental is safer than a one-shot.
  • It is not recycled hot. A number previously used on Walmart within 45 days will fail for you too, through no fault of yours.
  • It is a US number, not merely a US-looking one. Area code is not line type; a VoIP number with a US area code still reads as VoIP.

Free public number lists fail this test almost by definition — they are shared, heavily reused, and usually VoIP. We dug into why in free vs paid non-VoIP numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an email address instead of a phone number on Walmart?

Not at signup. Email is required too, but it does not replace the mobile number — Walmart asks for both and verifies the phone by SMS before creating the account. After the account exists you can switch sign-in codes to email.

Can I remove my phone number from my Walmart account later?

You can change it, but Walmart states it requires a valid phone number for existing accounts as well as new ones, so you cannot leave the field empty. What you can do is move your sign-in and two-factor codes to email so the number stops being part of your daily login.

Why does Walmart say my phone number is already in use when it is mine?

Almost always because the number is attached to an older Walmart account you forgot about, or because it received a Walmart verification code in the last 45 days. Both are documented rules rather than bugs. Recover the old account, or wait out the 45 days — but note that reusing the number on a new account detaches it from the old one.

Does a Walmart verification code work on a landline?

No. The code is sent as a text message, so the number has to be able to receive SMS. A landline cannot complete the step, and neither can a number whose line type the check reads as VoIP.

Is using a non-VoIP number for Walmart against the rules?

Using a real US mobile number you control to verify one genuine account is ordinary. What Walmart enforces against is account farming — many accounts to work promotions or resale. The line is intent and volume, not whether the number came bundled with a handset.
